“K-9 Down” Event Teaches Crucial Life-Saving Techniques for Dogs in Dangerous Jobs
May 6, 2008
(New York, N.Y.) Professionals working to protect and serve face serious injury and possibly losing their lives on a daily basis. The same is true for their working canine counterparts. Dogs are not your typical agents, officers or emergency personnel and, in turn, need specialized veterinary medical care in an emergency. To make sure their human partners know what to do when man’s best friend is injured, NYC Veterinary Specialists in Manhattan will hold “K-9 Down”, a very visual and hands on event teaching life-saving techniques for dogs working in potentially harmful careers.
From fire prevention & control teams, various task forces, search & rescue teams, law enforcement agencies, HAZMAT squads, US Border Patrol agents, to working with the US Department of Justice and even the FBI, dogs are an essential part of the everyday work done to protect and serve human beings.
“We treat our dogs the same way we would treat out task force members. They are members of our family. ‘K-9 Down’ is an invaluable asset and an incredible teaching tool for our medical specialists. If any of our dogs are injured, ‘K-9 Down’ insures they can receive the same level of care,” says Lieutenant Ernie Capote, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue & Florida Task Force 1.
At the sessions, taking place on May 17th and 18th, board-certified veterinary specialists will teach professional canine working dog handlers from across the country how to treat gunshot wounds, eye injuries, perform CPR, apply bandages, take vital signs and do other things that are essential in helping an injured animal survive. According to Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist Vanessa Kuonen, “’K-9 down’ is very special because it gives handlers the basic tools they need to stabilize canine injuries until they can be seen by a veterinarian. I’ll be giving important tips to participants about canine eye trauma. After all, without their eyes, working canines can’t work!”
The fully-booked program is helpful for fire rescue workers who may pull their canine counterparts from a burning building or come across an animal with some other type of health emergency. “We’re thrilled about the overwhelming response from professional working dog handlers across the country. It’s an honor to be able to open our doors and offer such an incredible program, a program we hope will save the lives of those working to save ours, both human and canine,” says Gail Moore, K-9 Down Program Administrator, NYC Veterinary Specialists.
“K-9 Down” is made possible by the Frankie’s Friends Charitable Pet Foundation at NYC Veterinary Specialists. This Foundation raises funds to support research, education and indigent care for the pets and people of our community. Visit www.nyc-vs.com/giving/ for more information.

Toyota Offers Free Defensive Driving Program for New York Teens to Learn Critical Driving Skills
April 29, 2008
(Long Island, N.Y.) – Teenagers are involved in fatal traffic accidents at more than twice the rate of the rest of the U.S. population, and according to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, New York ranked among the top 15 states in highest number of teen driver fatalities in 2006. To help prevent future teen driving deaths in the area, Toyota is hosting its hands-on teen and parent advanced driving skills program, “Toyota Driving Expectations,” in Elmont, N.Y. at the Belmont Park Race Track, May 2-4.
Offered free of charge, the program goes beyond what is taught in typical driver training classes by putting teens behind the wheel to face challenging, real-world scenarios under the supervision of professional drivers. It is also one of the only programs of its kind that requires teens to attend with a parent or guardian so they can learn how to drive more safely together. In Elmont, 14 program sessions will be held—two four-hour sessions on Friday, May 2 between 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. and six four-hour sessions on both Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4 between 8 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Registration is now open online at www.toyotadrivingexpectations.com.
“Toyota is committed to safe driving and equipping teens with the tools and confidence they need to become better drivers,” said Michael Rouse, Toyota’s corporate manager of national philanthropy and community affairs. “Since the program’s debut in 2004, Toyota Driving Expectations has touched the lives of more than 7,500 teens and parents, creating an open dialogue within families to develop and maintain safe driving habits.”
Each four-hour Toyota Driving Expectations program begins with an opening session for all participants where they are introduced to the privilege and risk associated with driving as well as the program’s curriculum, which includes driving courses and classroom-style sessions with tailored content on a broad range of driving-related topics.
The driving courses help teens practice how to best keep their eyes on the road, learn about how anti-lock braking systems work on both wet and dry roads and demonstrate how everyday distractions, to which new drivers are especially prone, can have unexpected, hazardous consequences. Parents also drive a distraction course so they can experience how reducing focus on the road poses serious dangers. At the end of the program, to reinforce what they learned, teens and parents develop a safe driving contract together to be put into practice when they return home.
A leading resource on strategies for advancing safety and health programs, The National Safety Council has been involved with Toyota Driving Expectations since its inception. The program includes elements of the Council’s signature driving programs, including Alive at 25 and Family Guide to Teen Drivers.

H2M Completes Renovations on the Historic Merrick Library
April 8, 2008
(Melville, N.Y.) H2M, a multi-disciplined Architectural & Engineering service firm recently completed work on the Historic Merrick Library. H2M was retained to perform renovations and alterations to the historic wing building.
The original building which was constructed in the 1880’s was significantly damaged by fire in 2005.
Aside from the fire damage, there had been many aesthetic modifications made through the years. After a review and presentation to the Town Landmarks Commission, H2M recommended that the building should be restored to its original grandeur. This is particularly evident in some of the details used in the renovation such as historically accurate doors and windows, some of which were recycled during the demolition process, as well as the interior finishes used in the Parlor.
Not compromising on the use of newer materials, and with an eye towards sustainability, products such as recycled cotton insulation and non VOC paints were used to promote healthy indoor air quality.
“Since I was born and raised in Merrick, that was my community library and it was very gratifying to see the building restored for the community,” said Robert M. Scheiner, A.I.A., Senior Vice President at H2M. His staff worked on the rehabilitation of the historic wing which will now be used as a community center.
