LONG ISLAND, NY – For many Long Islanders, buying clothes to keep themselves and their families warm for the winter has become a struggle. Fifth graders Cole Friedman and Michael Rivera of Grundy Avenue Elementary School wanted to do their part in helping their community stay warm this winter. By utilizing their kind-hearted nature, they initiated their own coat drive at Grundy Avenue Elementary School by announcing to their classmates they would be accepting donations of winter coats and garments to donate to Legislator Lindsay’s annual coat drive.
After collecting dozens of bags filled with coats, Cole and his mother dropped the items off at Legislator Lindsay’s office in order to assist with the Legislator’s goal of collecting as many items as possible for the organization Every Child’s Dream.
“I was amazed that Cole and Michael brought together their classmates and educators in order to initiate an effort so kind and selfless for the less fortunate,” said Legislator Lindsay. “It’s important to acknowledge and commend altruistic acts of children. I hope that next year, more children decide to follow in Cole and Michael’s footsteps and start collections of their own.”
Legislator Lindsay presented Cole and Michael with proclamations in front of their class at Grundy Avenue Elementary School last week.
