NEW YORK – On Saturday, April 22nd Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano joined with community and family members in dedicating a bench at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola in remembrance of Melvin Harris, Jr. Melvin suddenly passed away in November 2015 while serving as an aide to the Office of the County Executive. Melvin served our community in several volunteer capacities, including as a Commissioner of the Nassau County Human Rights Commission; President of the NAACP – Hempstead Branch; and as President Emeritus of the Nostrand Gardens Civic Association. Melvin also worked as a union leader for the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1056.
County Executive Mangano stated, “Mel Harris always stood tall for what he believed was right and advocated for individuals and organizations. He always answered the call of the community, and approached issues with one-on-one discussions. This bench signifies a place where similar discussions can be held in order to seek resolution. Nassau County will forever remember Mel with gratitude, and for the love he had for his family and his community.”
Joining the County Executive and his wife Linda at the bench dedication were: Members of the Uniondale Fire Department; Mel’s wife Patty Harris and their children Kayla and Lataya; Mel’s parents, Mr. and Mrs Melvin Harris Sr.; his mother-in-law Geraldine Dixon; his cousins Pam Utley, Michele Hill, Mike Harris; Barbara Boren of Hempstead Community Coordinating Council; members of the Uniondale Community Council; Mary Ellen Kreye; Lorrain Danser of the Youth Project; Noel Charles; Deputy County Executive Dr. Philip Elliot; Barbara Powell, Vice President of the NAACP of Hempstead; and Heidi Sanft, 1st Vice President of the Nostrand Gardens Civic Association of Uniondale.
