NEW YORK – On Monday, March 27th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Suffolk County Legislator Al Krupski, Brookhaven Town Officials, the Ridge Civic Association, and the Ridge Fire Department at the demolition of the Ridge Motel East. The property had been blighted for many years and posed a public safety threat to the community. Alongside community groups, Legislator Anker has strongly advocated for the rehabilitation of this property and has worked tirelessly to revitalize the entire Middle Country Road corridor, including the revitalization of the old Kmart property and the Coram Plaza. Once the structure is demolished, Suffolk County will preserve the property as open space.
“It is truly a victory for the whole community to see this demolition come to fruition and I am pleased to have Suffolk County take ownership of this property for open space preservation,” said Legislator Anker. “I thank the Ridge Civic Association and the Ridge Fire Department for being so persistent with this issue. When the community bans together, we can truly make a difference.”
Since taking public office, Legislator Anker has strongly advocated to expedite county processes that would lead to the demolition of the Ridge Motel East. In 2014, she asked the County Treasurer to foreclose on the property and seize the deed due to the large amount of money owed in taxes. In 2016, she advocated to Suffolk County Real Estate to deny the owner extensions for redemption of the property, as well as voted NO when the extension came before the Legislature last December.
