LONG ISLAND, NY – Long Island Used Cars, owned and operated by Long Island Media Inc., one of the Island’s prominent digital players as well as owners of LONG ISLAND EXCHANGE, have announced the purchase of two new gTLD domain names (generic top level domains); www.LI.cars and www.LongIsland.cars, both which currently redirect to its local automotive advertising service.
Chief executive John Colascione announced the acquisition yesterday: “As you might expect, we’re excited about these new domain names and believe they will further cement us into the Long Island market as leaders in the automotive space, not just innovators.” Colascione said, “The internet changes fast and you’re either going to sit back and watch the net evolve around you, or you’re going to take part in it. We’ll choose the latter.”
Long Island Media Inc. owns and operates the Island’s only automotive finding service, LIUsedCars.com. Colascione, who founded the automotive part of the business in 2012, revealed that over eighty of the Island’s franchise and independent dealers participate in the program, which generates leads for used cars. In addition, all Long Island Media publications play a role in supporting the service, known locally as Long Island Used Cars, a DBA of Long Island Media Inc.

Colascione continued: “We currently have over eighty of the largest franchise and independent dealerships participating in the program and are in the process of rolling out our new national platform, which is also located on what we feel is a new, fresh and ideal URL for the service, www.find.cars. The Long Island related URLs were actually an after-thought believe it or not, or at least, something I was holding off on, but now that we are ready with our national platform, I’m more comfortable owning all three. As far as our efforts go nationally, we obviously do not have the leverage we have here on the Island. Dot cars allows us to secure a great name and will help us stand out in an ever growing and crowded space.”
The .Cars domain is one of hundreds of new domain extensions now available on a first-come, first-served basis, and helps make long, clunky domains a thing of the past.
The new domains, specifically released for the automotive industry, also hold the potential to help dealers capture more organic search engine traffic as well according to Auto Remarketing, who reached out to Daniel Negari, chief executive officer of Cars Registry: “Almost every domain variation will be available to register, including city, state, and region domain names,” Negari explained. “For example, a dealer could display their pre-owned inventory on LosAngeles.cars, and then start to capture search engine traffic for competitive keywords like ‘Los Angeles cars’ and ‘Los Angeles used cars’. The dealer could then run search engine marketing, TV, print, and radio campaigns and track the results on their new Web address.”
Within the last several years, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (or ICANN), started accepting applications for new domain extensions from registrars and private organizations. Advocates for the new domains claimed that since most of the good .com, .net and others are taken, something needed to be done to address the growth of the Web where it came to websites and domain names. Applications that were accepted included extensions like .guide, .guru, .online, .site, and .website. ICANN also accepted applications for company-specific ones such as .apple and .google, but each TLD came at a very hefty $185,000 price tag. To date, 938 new domain names have been approved and are making their way to the Internet.
All .cars domain names are priced between $2,000 – $3,000 MSRP per year, depending on where they are registered. The new automotive domains, which include .cars, .car, and .auto, were all released to trademark holders in December 2015. General availability opened up beginning on January 20, 2016, yet due to their unusually high registration price, many premium or highly desirable domains are still available for registration.
Find.cars will be the companies’ first venture outside of the Island. Long Island Media Inc. owns and operates the largest privately held network of Long Island based web sites on the internet. It’s entire network of locally owned web sites, all of which have been acquired over the span of nearly two decades, serve nearly one million visitors per month. It’s massive library of digital publications include industry giant LongIsland.com, Long Island’s Most Popular Website™ Since 1996, Online news site “Long Island Exchange®” The Guide to Everything That is Long Island, since 2002, and a portfolio of others, all targeting the Long Island New York region.
