Amityville, NY – February 29th, 2016 – On February 20th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey participated in the Town of Babylon’s 28th Annual Black History Month Celebration, which took place at Amityville Memorial High School.
The special celebration was attended by a wide variety of honorees, elected officials, talented entertainers, and people of all ages from the greater Babylon community.
This year’s theme was “Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memory.” The theme provided a unique opportunity for the event’s participants and guests to deeply reflect upon both the struggles and successes of African-Americans over the course of America’s history.
As attendees learned during the celebration, hallowed ground may be a site such as the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., or even an institution, such as historically black colleges, as the Honorable Derrick Robinson (the keynote speaker) so thoroughly explained. Many sacred sites exist across the nation – with Long Island being no exception – that convey inspiring stories and teach important lessons.
Today, as a nation, we have come a long way in ensuring that everyone is treated equally and has a fair shot at the American Dream. This progress continues to make headway, and is in large part due to the activism and devotion of people akin to this year’s honorees.
Through their collective contributions in the fields of criminal justice, community organizing, public service, business, and education, the honorees have touched the hearts and minds of countless individuals in ways that can never truly be calculated.
“This year’s celebration was exceptionally informative, in addition to being a source of inspiration for so many people,” said McCaffrey.
“On top of everything else, those who attended were treated to some outstanding demonstrations of local talent in music and dance. I am confident that everyone who took part in the celebration went home with a healthy degree of pride and hope for our future as a community and nation.”
