August 6, 2015
WEST BABYLON, NY – Suffolk County Police have arrested Devon Smith-Martin, 19, after he shot another man in front of his home in West Babylon yesterday.
According to police, an ongoing dispute between two groups led to a large gathering in front 4 Lamberta Court. Several people became involved in a physical altercation which resulted in a 19 year-old man sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim was transported by a friend at the scene to a local hospital for treatment of what was described by police as a non-life threatening injury.
Police responded to the scene after a 911 caller reported shots fired but both the suspect and victim had already left. An investigation by First Squad detectives determined that Devon Smith-Martin was responsible for the shooting and he was arrested a short time later.
Smith-Martin, of Lamberta Court, West Babylon, was charged with Assault 2nd Degree and Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree. He was held overnight at the First Precinct and was arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
