
LONG ISLAND, NY – Suffolk County Police Third Squad Detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a bicyclist in Brentwood today.
Amilcar Mejia Alvarado was riding his bicycle southbound on Washington Avenue when he rode in front of and was struck by a 2002 Ford Escape that was traveling eastbound on Express Drive South at 7:45 a.m.
Alvarado, 22, of Brentwood, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Escape, Ginger D’Amato, 36, of Kings Park, was not injured.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
