Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Crash; Brentwood Driver, Alejandro Diaz, 33, Arrested for DWI, Leaving the Scene

(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police today arrested a Brentwood man for driving while intoxicated after he struck a pedestrian and fled the scene in Central Islip early this morning.
Alejandro Diaz was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck eastbound on Suffolk Avenue, 40 feet east of Bergen Street, at 3:03 a.m. when his vehicle veered off the road and struck Mark Pamphile, who was walking eastbound on the sidewalk. Diaz fled the scene and was arrested a short time later a short distance from the crash.
Pamphile, 22, of Cone Avenue, Central Islip, was transported by ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for serious injuries.
Alejandro Diaz, 33, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Injury.
Third Squad detectives charged Diaz, 33, of Crooked Hill Road, with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Injury. He will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on October 11.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
