Portuguese Tennis Pro Makes Base in Mineola / Williston Area As She Trains for 2014 US Open August 25 to September 8
July 28, 2014
(Mineola, NY) International Tennis player Frederica Piedade, a native of Algarve in the southern region of Portugal, has recently been seen in the Mineola/Williston area as she prepares for the 2014 US Open, which runs from August 25 to September 8 in Flushing Meadow.
Taking note of the large Portuguese presence in the area, Frederica has made her training base in the Williston’s, which border Mineola, while she meets with leaders and members of the community who have already made her a welcomed member. Frederica has already made any elegant appearance at the Long Island Portugal Day Celebration Gala in May, marched in the Mineola Portuguese parade in June and was last seen catching the USA vs. Portugal soccer game at the Portuguese Heritage Society’s Folklore Festival. Mineola is not new to professional athletes of Portuguese descent; it is the hometown of former Red Bulls defender and current NY Cosmos captain Carlos Mendes and former Arena Football player Craig Pinto.

Frederica has collected 11 singles and 19 doubles International Tennis Federation titles over her 17 year career, including championships in Brazil, Egypt, Israel, Mexico, Spain and Portugal; amassing just shy of 500 professional wins. Piedade, who held a career high WTA ranking of 142 in May 2006, has competed in all four grand slams (Australian Open, Roland Garros, US Open and Wimbledon) while having a 12-4 record representing her nation in the International Federations Cup.
When asked about her future plans and if she enjoys the area, Piedade said that “my dream would be to train children or open my very own academy” and added that “the rich Portuguese community and interest in tennis on Long Island offers an exciting opportunity [for me] to settle down here when my career is over.”
Frederica has recently set up English-language social media pages for her Long Island fans to follow her during the US Open on facebook at “FREDERICA PIEDADE (Athlete).”
