Brandon Swopes, 23, arrested after discharging his pistol into his leg, cops said
(Long Island, NY) A suspect in an armed robbery was arrested in Hempstead on Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while attempting to make good on his escape, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
Brandon Swopes, 23, approached two men in a 1994 Lexus on Wellesley Street at approximately 2:30 a.m. Swopes allegedly opened the door of the vehicle, produced a handgun, and demanded money and valuables from the men, a 39 year-old and a 44 year-old, police said.
Swopes, who resides at 100 Terrace Avenue, then allegedly proceeded to pistol whip the 39 year-old victim, striking him in the face. Swopes managed to acquire cash and a cell phone from the victims and fled on foot eastbound on Wellsely Street, according to reports.
While attempting to put his pistol in the waistband of his pants as he ran, Swopes instead accidentally discharged the weapon, firing a round into his right leg, cops said.
Hempstead police were called to the scene of the crime, where they placed Swopes under arrest. He and the victim he assaulted were taken to a local area hospital and treated for their injuries. Police on the scene recovered a 9mm pistol and the items stolen from the victims, according to authorities.
As soon as he is medically cleared, Swopes will be charged with four counts of robbery, four counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of criminal use of a firearm.
