Council Candidate Helps Fellow 2013 Hopefuls Get on Ballot
July 5, 2013
(New York, N.Y.) Council Candidate Ben Kallos is offering free voter file access starting today to all 2013 City candidates in the hopes of electing a better City Council. Free voter file accounts will allow Democratic and Republican Party Primary candidates to verify petition signatures so that they can get the 450, 2,000 and 3,750 signatures from registered voters in their party to get on the ballot for City Council, Borough President and Citywide office, respectively.
These petitions must be filed with the Board of Elections between Monday, July 8 and Thursday, July 11.
NYC Charter Ballot Access Requirements:
450 City Council
2,000 Borough President
Voter Activation Network (VAN) accounts allow candidates to verify signatures to allow them on to the ballot and generate canvassing lists – both central to well-run campaigns – but they can be prohibitively costly to set up. By allowing candidates to access the voter file data for free, Kallos expects to expand access to first-time candidates who can bring necessary independence to City Hall.
VoterSearch.org was originally created by Kallos in 2007 when he discovered millions of New York State voters were dropped from the statewide voter file. The site was the first in the State to allow any New Yorker to verify their registration and was used to protect voting rights by the New York Democratic Lawyers Council for which Kallos serves as Statewide Coordination Chair.
“All candidates – even first-time candidates – should have access to the best possible tools for a fair fight,” said Kallos. “Hopefully this will promote candidates with big ideas instead of lackadaisical members of the political establishment.”
Candidates interested in accessing the voter file for free can send an email to Kallos at email@example.com for access through VoterSearch.org.
Access to the voter file is a cornerstone of any campaign, and spreading access to this information helps build a robust local democracy.
Kallos has been the Executive Director of a leading good government group, entrepreneur, attorney, and the former Chief of Staff for Assembly Member Jonathan Bing. Learn more about his run for City Council District 5 at http://KallosForCouncil.com.
