Robert Gioia Jr., 29, charged with three counts of first-degree robbery
(Long Island, NY) A Babylon man was arrested this week for allegedly being responsible for three armed robberies of Suffolk County tanning salons, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Robert Gioia Jr., 29, is accused of robbing three local tanning salons at gunpoint, all within a one-week period beginning on May 21; Rockstar Tans Salon on N. Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst, European Image Tanning Center in West Babylon, and Perfect Color Tanning Salon in Lindenhurst, cops said.
Police said Gioia’s alleged mode of operation was to enter the establishments in question armed with a black handgun. He would point the weapon at the employee behind the counter and demand money from the register, fleeing the scene after getting cash, according to reports.
Gioia, a resident of 382 Camden Avenue, was arrested at the Suffolk County First Precinct Thursday following an extensive investigation by law enforcement officials. He was charged with three counts of first-degree robbery and other traffic-related offenses, police said.
Gioia was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip, where he pled not guilt to the charges against him. He is currently being held in lieu of $150,000 cash bail or $300,000 bond. Court records show that he was represented by the Legal Aid Society.
