Car driver dies in head-on crash with tour bus
(Long Island, NY) An unidentified Long Island resident died after his car collided head-on with a tour bus early Sunday morning, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
The male victim was as traveling eastbound on the Route 25A Bypass in his 2007 Toyota Scion when, for currently unknown reasons, he swerved into the opposite westbound lane and crashed directly into a Prevost Coach tour bus at approximately 7:40 p.m.
The bus had no passengers on it at the time of the accident, aside from the bus driver, 36 year-old Sound Beach resident Richard Kiernan. The driver was transported by authorities to Port Jefferson’s John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and treated minor injuries, after which he was released, according to police.
The driver of the Toyota, whose identity is being withheld pending the notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the scene, cops said.
A safety check of the tour bus was performed by the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Unit, which has not yet released their results to the public. The victim’s Toyota Scion was impounded pending a safety inspection.
Suffolk County Police Detectives are requesting that anyone with information about the crash to contact the Suffolk Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
