Margaret Dopfel, 46, is charged with a felony under Leandra’s Law
(Long Island, NY) An Islip Terrace woman was placed under arrest for getting into a car accident with a young child in her vehicle while allegedly driving under the influence of drugs, according to the New York State Police.
Margaret Dopfel, 46, had rear-ended another vehicle at approximately 9 a.m. while driving in the westbound lane of the Southern State Parkway on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred in Lindenhurst near Exit 36, and Dopfel had an 8 year-old boy as a passenger in her car at the time, police said.
When State Troopers responded to the scene, they suspected that Dopfel was impaired by an illicit substance and placed her under arrest. After being transported to a nearby Police station, Dopfel voluntarily submitted to a blood chemical test, which confirmed the suspicions of the Troopers that she had been operating her vehicle while under the influence of drugs, according to authorities.
The child, who was unharmed, was released to a family member, police said.
Dopfel was arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Central Islip on the charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, endangering the welfare of a child and driving while intoxicated with a child under 16 in the vehicle, a felony under Leandra’s Law.
