Jerry Lewis, 25, faces 30 years in prison
(Long Island, NY) A man has finally come clean about a horrific murder he committed two years ago that left a community grieving for the tragic loss of a mother and her child, according to Suffolk County Police.
This week, Jerry Lewis, 25, owned up to the death of his ex-girlfriend Shakeela Planter, 21, and her two year-old son Jaiden after denying his role in their deaths since their bodies were discovered on Dec. 18, 2011 in her South Cardinal Court home in North Bay Shore. Lewis had previously lived there with Planter for four months, authorities said.
The body of Planter, a dietician at Huntington Hospital, was discovered by her landlord after missing several days at work prompted him to check in on her. She had been stabbed to death in a room in the home’s basement. Her son was found beaten to death, his body stuffed in a freezer in a separate room of the basement, said Suffolk County Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky.
“The female was stabbed a number of times. The baby was viciously beaten,” he said. “The baby was ultimately put in the plastic bag and put in the freezer. Female was bound and wrapped and left on the bed.”
Lewis had no previous history of criminal behavior or domestic abuse.
After committing the murders, Jamaican immigrant Lewis, whose motive for the killings is still not known, fled to Laurel, Maryland in an attempt to elude police. He was later caught by authorities and sent back to Suffolk County after extradition proceedings, all the while denying being the cause of the death of Planter and her child, according to reports.
That changed this Thursday of this week when Lewis pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder in at Suffolk County court.
Lewis is facing 30 years in prison when Judge Richard Ambro pronounces his sentence on April 3, 2013.
