salon.jpg (Long Island, N.Y.) T.Carlton’s Spalon has enjoyed a successful and prominent sixteen year run, which is an admirable accomplishment for any institute. In an effort to give back to those who have helped T.Carlton to grow and thrive over these sweet, sixteen years, the hair studio and day spa was proud to host T.Carlton’s Sweet 16 Spalabration.

This exciting event was held on Saturday, July 19th at T.Carlton’s Spalon, located in Smithtown, New York. Over 200 people showed up to enjoy this unparalleled affair that was put together to celebrate sixteen years of achievement. The underlying theme of the night was thankfulness to all of the salon’s clients who are responsible for its success. Christine Carlton, co-owner of T.Carlton’s, said, “Spalabration is our way of saying thank you to our wonderful clients for our 16 years of success”. She also emphasized how important all her staff is, saying “without [the staff], we could not do this on our own.”

Those who attended the fun-filled event enjoyed a wide variety of delicious food and drink. The entertainment was wonderful as well. Joan Rivers persona-tor were present to interview people on the red carpet as they entered. Once inside, guests were entertained by an illusionist as well as given the opportunity to play at a real casino table with the chance to win a gift card to T.Carlton. Later in the night, a dancing John Tavolota lookalike performed for those at the event. One attendee found the hair show presented by T.Carlton so amazing that she compared it to a hair show in New York City. Overall, T.Carlton Spalon hosted a wonderful event for its loyal clients, further proving how successful the T.Carlton family has become over the past sixteen years.

Friends Across America Program Connects Kids From All Fifty States

July 22, 2008

kids_america.jpg (Kings Park, N.Y.) Makingfriends.com, Inc. has found an easy way for children across the United States to connect to one another. With its Friends Across America Program, kids can learn about different cultures and lifestyles through sharing a common interest: crafts. The program consists of children sending and receiving “paper friends” between other participants across the country.

“The kids find joy in making the paper friends and receiving them from all different states,” said Terri Bose, founder of Makingfriends.com, Inc., “and while they are having fun, they are also learning about the diversity in our country. It is creating unity and providing them with many hours of crafting fun.”

When the kids receive paper friends from different states they can save them in binders or plot maps of the places they came from. Terri has made this a simple exchange project in which the children print the free paper friends from the website, personalize them, and send them back to Makingfriends.com, Inc. In return the company sends them a paper friend from another child, as well as ships out their paper friend. It is cost-friendly for the parents and enriching for the children who participate in the program.

Makingfriends.com, Inc. was founded in 1998 to provide all levels of crafters an easily accessible variety of do-it-yourself projects. The site offers a wide range of craft materials, ideas, and full project kits that are sent directly to the customer. With 10,000 to 40,000 site visits a day, this small business is expanding to many different markets in the online world.

For more information about Makingfriends.com and the Friends Across America Program please call (631) 979-7331 or email makingfr@optonline.net.

High Crude Oil Prices Fall for First Time in Recent Months

July 17, 2008

(Long Island, N.Y.) On July 16th, for the first time in recent months the price of a barrel of crude oil went down more than $10 which gives some hope that the price may drop further as either demand continues dropping, or if by some chance, supply increases.

The effects of high crude oil prices are insidiously working their way through the Long Island economy. Because oil is at the core of almost everything we do, any dramatic price shifts are almost immediately reflected in major product segments. From airline tickets to tires, from the price of a grape fruit to a three pound can of coffee. Even the price of electricity is impacted by higher petroleum prices.

While companies, governments and individuals all share in the pain of higher oil prices, ultimately it is the individual who pays for it all. Companies are owned by individual investors, government is funded by individual taxpayers and it is the individual consumer who buys the products and services marketed by companies. So, in the end, high oil prices impacts everything for the consumer.

How does the average Joe react to the price of gasoline increasing 25-percent per gallon in less than six months? The answer depends on whether the increases are sustained over a long period of time, or if it is a short-term spike as in the case of a Middle East flare that is over and forgotten in less than two weeks.

Unfortunately, our current round of ever-higher crude oil prices seems to be a sustained, long term trend. The available evidence suggests that we need to adapt to the higher prices. Individually we are going to have to make many changes in our appliances, transportation and housing to cut costs while maintaining the standard of living we want.

Technology will in many cases help us cut our energy consumption through new efficient designs. “It is unlikely that there is any one big thing that will be the total answer to our energy needs; more likely it is going to be a collection of small savings here and there that add up to big savings for the individual.” said Brian Keegan, owner of Long Island Auto Find, a local automotive dealer which has seen significant changes in the buying and selling paterns of his Long Island customers. “Oil prices are really hitting consumers in the pocket, and we are seeing it in our dealerships vehicle sales.” he said.

Individual conservation is important and a part of the solution to this complex problem, but public policy is also an equally important factor. Part of the reason we have this problem is because we need to increase domestic supply and distribution. This week there is good news on that front as well with President Bush lifting the executive order banning off shore oil exploration and production. He also called on Congress to do away the similar legislative bans. We can only hope that Congress is listening.

GreenSpeaks “Healthy Food Issues and Answers” Forum to be Held July 28th

July 14, 2008

A panel of experts explores the many aspects of food including nutrition, pesticides, sources of our food supply, ingredients and how these affect your family’s health and the environment.

(Southampton, NY) - “Healthy Food Issues and Answers”, the impact of food on health and the environment is the topic of discussion for the next LI Green GreenSpeaks Community Awareness Program that will be held on Monday July 28th 7 pm in the Duke Lecture Hall, Chancellors Hall on the Stony Brook Southampton campus.  This program is for all members of the community and is designed to be highly interactive with plenty of opportunity for questions and comments from the audience.  Attendees will leave with resource handouts so that they can easily follow what they learn about.

“Food is a green issue,” stated Chuck Schwartz, Director of LI Green and the moderator of the program.  “What we eat, its nutritional value, how it was farmed, the ingredients used, the addition of chemicals such as preservatives and food colorings, where it was produced, the ways it is transported, how we prepare it, what we do with the wastes left over.  Each of these has significant effects on our family’s health and the environment.”

“This month’s GreenSpeaks program is especially exciting,” continues Mr. Schwartz.  “Each speaker on our panel is a known expert in their field.  Dr. Josephine Connelly-Schoonen,  professor of nutrition at Stony Brook University Medical School, is also the director of Heart-Links, an educational program working with local schools to combat food related childhood diseases including obesity, diabetes and others.  Bob DiBenidetto is a partner at Healthy Planet, a community organization that provides healthy lifestyle educational programs. Scott Chaskey is general manager of Quail Hill Farms, an organic community supported agriculture center on the east end of Long Island, and also serves as the current president of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA).”

Some of the topics that will be discussed at the July 28th GreenSpeaks lecture include:

  • Why the risk to children from food related diseases is approaching catastrophic levels and what we have to do about it?
  • What do “Natural” and “Organic” really mean and how to see beyond the advertising hype.
  • How do you really read and understand food labels?
  • Which foods and ingredients it is essential get removed from everyone’s diets?
  • Do risks from food additives, pesticide residues, dyes and preservatives really exist?
  • What are the benefits to your health, pocketbook and the environment from eating a more plant based diet and why it may be so vital.
  • What are the health and environmental advantages of eating a diet that is more locally produced?

GreenSpeaks lectures are held periodically at Stony Brook Southampton on green topics.  Starting this fall programs will also be held in other locations throughout Long Island.  More information is available at  www.ligreen.com/greenspeaks.

New Services Offered by Recruiting Video Production Company

July 8, 2008

DVD Mastering & DVD Duplication Coaches, Instructors, Athletic Directors, Scouts, and Athletes Can Now Protect Important Video Assets

(Bayside, N.Y) - FULL RIDE VIDEO PRODUCTIONS, a leader throughout the tri-state area in the production of recruiting videos for high school student-athletes, has expanded its services to include DVD Mastering and DVD Duplication.

For years, videotape has been the media-of-choice.  Games, practices, clinics and other athletic events were captured on videotape.  However, videotape is a magnetic medium which deteriorates with normal use and time. It can be adversely affected by environmental conditions and the quality of duplicated videotapes degrades with each generational copy made.

DVD is today’s media standard.  The disc is read optically using a laser and is not affected by climate, magnets, or electricity.  Because DVD is a digital format, there’s no quality loss during duplication.  Also, viewers can access precise locations on a DVD via on-screen menus.

Sports professionals have extensive videotape libraries that are used repeatedly.  Coaches review game footage on videotape to analyze plays and formations.  Instructors demonstrate tips and techniques during chalkboard meetings using videotape.  Scouts send videotape to teams and athletic programs to promote their athletes.  Many sports enthusiasts even have a personal videotape collection of special events and historic moments in which they participated or were a spectator.  Whatever the application, now
is the time to protect valuable videotapes by converting them to DVD.  For those in the sports industry who distribute video, duplicating videos from DVD Masters is the method which ensures the highest quality.

“It was a smart decision to convert my videotapes to DVD. I have one set for the offense and another for the defense.  I’ve duplicated them and now every new member of the team gets a copy to review,” said one varsity football coach.

A college athletic director said  “I’ve been collecting videos from our teams at the university.  I worried about what might happen if one of the videotapes were damaged, so I’ve started converting them to DVD and have a backup copy of each one, too.”

For anyone who may require VHS videotape duplication, FULL RIDE VIDEO PRODUCTIONS provides this service, too.  For all services, flexible times can be arranged for video drop-off and pickup and/or the finished products can be mailed directly to customers upon request.

ABOUT FULL RIDE VIDEO PRODUCTIONS
FULL RIDE VIDEO PRODUCTIONS produces recruiting videos for high school student-athletes.  Its mission is to assist motivated individuals as they travel along the path toward a college education and a collegiate athletic career.  Founded in 2001, its motto is “Make your video the one coaches want to watch.”  Videos are content-rich and clearly demonstrate athletic skills and work ethic.  Research and firsthand discussions with college coaches are the building blocks upon which recruiting videos are produced.  Testimonials abound from candidates who, although not seen in live play, received offers from college athletic programs based solely upon their recruiting videos. Of these student-athletes, many also earned scholarships to compete athletically at the intercollegiate level.  In addition, FULL RIDE VIDEO PRODUCTIONS produces sports/other video content on a contract basis.

Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission Created

June 26, 2008

(Albany, N.Y.) State Senator Antoine Thompson (D-Buffalo/Niagara Falls) and his Senate colleagues have received final passage of a measure creating a 13-member commission to create a cultural corridor in Niagara County honoring the underground railroad, an informal network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th century Black slaves in the United States to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists who were sympathetic to their cause.

The Underground Railroad was at its height between 1810 and 1850. Census figures from that period estimate that 6,000 people escaped enslavement using the Underground Railroad.

“We want to build on our cultural assets,” said Senator Thompson. “We have an internationally-known city with a cultural corridor that we can put into place in such a way that we can create a tremendous economic benefit in the growing industry of cultural tourism. Tourists will be able to visit the old sites, go to shops and boutiques and a tribute plaza.”

The measure was also sponsored by Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte (D-Lewiston).

“Niagara Falls attracts over 8 million visitors every year, but it is so much more than a one-stop tourist destination,” said Assemblywoman DelMonte. “The creation of an Underground Railroad Heritage Area will provide an opportunity for students and families to learn about the role Niagara Falls and Niagara County played during this monumental point in history.  In addition, The Underground Railroad Heritage Area will provide a boost to the local economy by encouraging visitors to stay in Niagara Falls longer.”

Approximately two thousand slaves from all slaveholding states were able to escape each year using the Underground Railroad. The psychological impact upon slaveholders of a well-organized network to assist escaped slaves was immense. Under the original Fugitive Slave Law of 1793, the responsibility for catching runaway slaves fell to officials of the states from where the slaves came.

The escape network of the Underground Railroad was not literally subterranean, but rather “underground” in the sense of underground resistance. The network was known as a “railroad” by way of the use of rail terminology in the code. The Underground Railroad consisted of meeting points, secret routes, transportation, and safe houses, and assistance provided by abolitionist sympathizers. Individuals were often organized in small, independent groups, which helped to maintain secrecy since some knew of connecting “stations” along the route but few details of their immediate area.

Due to the risk of discovery, information about routes and safe havens was passed along by word of mouth. Federal marshals and professional bounty hunters known as slave catchers pursued fugitives to Niagara Falls.

The bill allows for twelve members of the commission to be appointed as follows:  four  to be appointed by the governor, two appointed by the temporary president of the senate, two appointed by the speaker of the assembly, one  person appointed  by the minority leader of assembly, one appointed by the minority leader of the senate and two  members appointed by the mayor of the city of Niagara Falls. The other member will be the chair of the Niagara county legislature, or  his  or her  designee. All  appointments need to be residents of the county of Niagara.  At the initial meeting the members will elect officers.

“By forming the commission we will be able to provide access to federal and state dollars,” Senator Thompson said. “As many people know, Niagara Falls is the honeymoon capital of the world but it is also the last stop on the Underground Railroad.”

Long Island Homeowners Seek Savings through C.O.D Heating Oil Services

June 18, 2008

heatingoil.gif (Long Island, N.Y.) High heating oil prices are turning the mindsets of thousands of consumers while the tides turn on oil dealers who require long term oil contracts and commitments from their customers. More Long Islanders are ordering home heating oil on a “cash on delivery” (C.O.D) basis in an attempt to save money. While most oil dealers that require a commitment are fair in their pricing, cash on delivery (C.O.D) services are becoming a popular way to order heating oil giving consumers more choices and better competitive prices.

Shopping on-line for home heating oil has increasingly become more popular. A new Internet site called www.codfuel.com lets Long Islanders use its on-line marketplace to purchase discount heating oil virtually choosing their own price per gallon. “There is more flexibility with pricing and payment options with C.O.D oil delivery than ever before; also consumers have the freedom of ordering as much or as little oil as they want. Ordering on a C.O.D basis can save between .50-.90 cents per gallon over the “full service” counterpart.” said CodFuel.com owner John Franco.

High oil prices are not just affecting consumers. Owners of “full service” oil companies are also feeling the punch. Many of these oil dealers are having difficulty getting paid in time from their customers and in return are having difficulty paying their own suppliers. Some oil dealers have renegotiated payment terms and locked in oil prices. They have also added additional late fees, termination fees, fuel surcharges and other miscellaneous fees to their contracts. Even some of the “good paying” customers have gotten burned by some oil dealers who could not provide fuel at the promised price; now forcing the consumer to find oil at a higher price than what was previously negotiated. It’s too expensive for full service oil dealers to play the part of a banker. They just cannot finance the oil at these rates. C.O.D is cut and dry. The oil dealer fills up their truck and gets paid instantly when the oil is pumped into a customer’s tank. This eliminates the risk of consumers getting over inflated oil prices and also leaves room for the oil dealer to provide a discount because there are no payment terms. www.Codfuel.com accepts cash, M/C, Visa, Discover and American Express.

“Ordering oil on a C.O.D basis alleviates many of today’s fears with full service oil. Prices go up and down daily as the market changes but the C.O.D price per gallon always reflects discounted rates. Visit www.codfuel.com today to check current oil prices in your area. It’s fast, easy and free for all consumers” said CodFuel.com owner John Franco.

City government is also increasingly being pinched at the pump, with its gasoline and heating fuel bills soaring nearly 40 percent during the last year. Some analysts are warning that consumers should expect prices to continue to skyrocket in 2009.

Suffolk Safe Kids Launches Safety Program at RAMP Chevy

June 11, 2008

ramp-chevy.jpg (Long Island, N.Y.) Safe Kids Suffolk in partnership with RAMP Chevy, launched the first Automotive Safety Patch Program for Cub Scouts in New York State. This is a new component of the existing Safe Kids/Chevrolet “Safe Kids Buckle Up Program”. Scouts ages 6 to 10 participated in the program that involved the scouts navigating through five different interactive safety stations successfully to earn their patch.

The program includes different aspects of automotive safety including: preventing trunk entrapment, proper car seat and booster usage, teaching families NEVER to leave a child alone in a vehicle (including a parent check list with helpful safety tips such as instructing parents to always walk all the way around a parked vehicle to check for children) and how to contact OnStar in the event of an emergency.

The success of this New York State launch could be measured by the excitement of the kids and the focus of the parents. The children were as excited about earning their “Safety Patch” as they were to sit in the cars, examine the engines and learn about the inner workings of the Chevy hybrid vehicles and the non-gas-burning Hydrogen Equinox.

“One of the components of this program that makes it so effective is that it requires the cooperation of parents and children,” said RAMP Vice President John Rampone. “This creates a safety lesson for both that will last far beyond the program.

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. While the majority of these deaths are traffic related, 10 percent occur off-road when children become entrapped, are left alone in vehicles or are backed over in driveways and parking lots. Through proper safety training RAMP and Safe Kids are working diligently to achieve national and international statistical reductions in preventable childhood injuries.

Susan Katz, RN, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Coordinator for Safe Kids Suffolk County notes “ People are unaware of the unseen hazards and unthinkable tragedies that can occur simply through lack of awareness. The mission of this program is to raise public awareness of the dangers children face, even in their very own driveways.”

Due to an overwhelming response to the first RAMP Safety-Patch program another training program has been scheduled for mid-June.
