(New York, NY) According to FoxNews.com, Academy Award winning actor Philip Hoffman was found dead Sunday of what is believed to be a Heroin overdose in his West Village, Manhattan apartment. Police say they are currently investigating whether or not Hoffman is yet another victim of “tainted heroin” which, according to the Nassau County Medical Examiner, is presumably in the area of New York, and specifically, on Long Island.

On Friday, the Nassau County Medical Examiner released information warning Long Island communities that a chemical known as fentanyl has been linked to at least, two deaths at the time, on Long Island. Fentanyl is a potent, synthetic opioid analgesic historically used to treat pain and is said to be 100 times more potent than morphine.
“Evidence associated with two cases has been analyzed by the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and has been determined to contain fentanyl in combination with the banned antipyretic metamizole. Specifically these glassine packets are stamped as “24K” in red ink” a press statement said.
At this time, Police are not certain whether Hoffman suffered from tainted heroin, but are investigating the possibility. According to the report, a friend, screenwriter David Bar Katz, found his body limp in the bathroom of his Manhattan apartment with a heroin-filled needle in his arm.
Hoffman played in a slew of movies, often characterizing drug fueled roles such as his 2007 role in “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”, where he convinces his down and out brother [played by Ethan Hawke] to help organize the robbery of their parents’ jewelry store.
Master filmmaker Sidney Lumet directs this absorbing suspense thriller about a family facing the worst enemy of all — itself. Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Andy, an overextended broker who lures his younger brother, Hank (Ethan Hawke), into a larcenous scheme: the pair will rob a suburban mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target..
Most recently, Hoffman was filming the last two Hunger Games movies before his death today. Hoffman was born July 23, 1967 in Fairport, NY, part of Monroe County.
