Hempstead Man on Probation Charged with Robbery, Assault, Burglary, Weapons, Other Charges

(Freeport, NY) A Hempstead man was arrested on January 13 for armed robbery where police say he hit a 21 year old woman on the nose with his gun, causing it to go off and strike her in the leg.
According to detectives, on April 10, 2013 at 11:29 a.m, Abram Owens, 32, of Hempstead along with another male yet to be arrested, forcibly entered a Rutland Road residence and were confronted by a 21 year old female victim and her 22 year old female friend.
Owens, who was armed with a silver revolver, struck the 21 year old victim with his gun to the face which caused his weapon to fire striking her in the leg. Owens’s accomplice, who stated “You’re not supposed to shoot her”, then fled the scene.
Owens, who forced both women upstairs at gunpoint, took the victim’s house phone as well as a cell phone and then fled the scene.
The victim was transported to an area hospital where she received treatment for her injuries.
Owens, who was advised by a friend of a Crime Stoppers flyer he had seen online regarding the incident, surrendered himself to First Squad detectives on January 13, 2014.
The defendant is charged with three counts of Robbery 1st Degree, Assault 1st Degree, two counts of Burglary 1st Degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm 1st Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Violation of Probation and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd Degree. He was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on January 14, 2014.
