(Long Island, NY) Sometimes a concept is so radical that there isn’t an existing word to describe it. That’s the case for Surge Business Growth Engine, a new business service located in the Totus Business Center in Melville.

“Is it a network? Yes, but networking usually describes a system for passing referrals, which is only a small part of what Surge does. Is it business coaching? Yes, but again, that is only part of the picture. Education and advisement are at the root of the program, but it provides so much more. Is it a support group? Yes. It brings small business owners together to learn, dream, brainstorm, problem solve and more. Is it an incubator? Yes, because the purpose of an incubator is to facilitate growth, but unlike traditional business incubators, Surge does not offer physical office space sharing to its members. Is it a discount buying club? Yes. Members are offered free or discounted business to business services through pre-screened Preferred Service Providers. Is it a funding program? Yes, members compete for grants within Surge’s in-house grant program. Surge is all of these things, but it is more. It is a business growth engine.” said Mary Redler, CEO.

Wantagh residents Mary Redler and John Dano founded Surge as a result of realizing that their clients’ needs are generally broader that they believe. In addition to her position as CEO of Surge, Redler is the founder and President of Building Your Image LLC, a Wantagh-based publicity consulting firm. Dano has been the Regional Developer for Sales Partners New York, a provider of high energy business events and training as well as business coaching. He is also the managing partner at Philosophy Group LLC, Private Equity Firm. The two friends often found themselves consulting one another on behalf of their clients who needed them both, but couldn’t afford all the fees. In trying to find a way to provide clients the support they need without straining their budgets, Surge was born.

In many ways, the formation of Surge is the model for what they hope to teach their membership. After several brainstorming sessions between them, Redler and Dano proposed the idea to a group of close associates who are also small business owners; Glenn Pollack of PGS Printing and Graphic Services in Roslyn, Chris Nolte of Props Web Design in Lindenhurst and Ilana Mele of Ilana Leah LLC Design Services and Duchessa Originals Handmade Jewelry in Wantagh. The interest and excitement were high, and the Board of Advisors was created, leveraging the varied skills, networks and experience of all of the parties.

Surge offers educational and inspirational seminars, opportunities for community; brainstorming and networking, online publicity, discounted services from reputable providers and the opportunity to participate in their in-house grant program which will be distributing grants each year, funded by proceeds of the program. All of these services are included in one low annual membership fee.

Naysayers have advised the group that the in-house grant program, which takes the grant money out of company revenue, is the path to financial failure, but the group surges ahead, grounded in their belief that small business holds the key to economic recovery on Long Island. The facts show that 90% of the 94,855 businesses on Long Island have fewer than 20 employees each. If these businesses can get the resources and support they need to become more profitable, create jobs, invest in equipment, expand or add lines of business - all at an affordable price, we can begin to see the marketplace transformed with fewer empty storefronts in our downtowns, lower unemployment rates and a more stable business property tax base for our school districts.

Time will tell whether the Surge team will realize their goals in this venture, but given the facts about business and the economy, this is one Surge that Long Island can welcome.
