NYAGV Announces Appointment of Leah Gunn Barrett As Executive Director

(New York, NY) - The Boards of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) and New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Education Fund (NYAGV Ed Fund) are pleased to announce that Leah Gunn Barrett has assumed the role of Executive Director. Ms. Barrett will oversee the organizations’ advocacy and public education efforts throughout New York State.
“Leah brings tremendous enthusiasm, passion, and creativity to the Executive Director position and with her experience she is ready to hit the ground running at a critical time for our organizations,” said Joan Wallstein, NYAGV and NYAGV Ed Fund Board Chair.
Ms. Barrett has a long personal and professional history of advocating for common sense policies to combat gun violence. In 2003, after the murder of her brother, Ms. Barrett became the Executive Director of CeaseFire Maryland, where she led lobbying, communication and community outreach efforts for the Maryland state-wide gun violence prevention group. In 2005, Ms. Barrett was awarded the Mayor’s Citation by then Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley for contributions to the civic welfare of Baltimore. Most recently, in addition to serving as an active Board Member of NYAGV and its Education Fund, Ms. Barrett served as an Assistant Dean of the Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs.
“I am pleased to become Executive Director at a pivotal moment for the advancement of state and federal legislative efforts to stem the tide of gun violence and to work in communities most affected by gun violence through our after school programs and other education efforts” said Ms. Barrett.
Ms. Barrett replaces Jackie Hilly, who recently retired after 5 years as Executive Director. Ms. Hilly spearheaded NYAGV’s federal and state advocacy efforts which contributed to the passage of the NY SAFE Act. She also strengthened and expanded NYAGV Ed Fund’s scope and impact in communities throughout New York.
