Demitri Hampton, 21, shot by armed assailants.
(Long Island, NY) A 21 year-old Flanders resident was killed early Sunday morning by armed assailants during an apparent home invasion, Suffolk County police said.
Demitri Hampton of Priscilla Avenue was discovered by authorities with a single gunshot wound to his chest after receiving a 911 call reporting that a man had been shot during a home invasion at approximately 3:15 a.m. Hampton was pronounced dead after being rushed to Riverhead’s Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said.
Suffolk police are reporting that there were an unknown number of assailants, but that they numbered at least two; the men were masked and wearing dark clothing, authorities said.
It is currently not known if the break-in was a random burglary, or if Hampton or someone else in the home was a specific target, according to police.
A Riverhead High School graduate, Hampton was a popular student and member of Bridgehampton’s First Church of God in Christ who was currently attending Suffolk County Community College. He was living with family at the time of his death.
This incident is the sixth reported armed home invasion in Suffolk County within a two-week span.
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are currently investigating the crime. They ask that anyone with information to call 631-852-6392 or 1-800-220-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
