Hall of Famer Lou Carnesecca and Former NBA Players Help the Archangel Michael Local Church Reach Matching Grant
(Muttontown, NY) Hall of Famer and St. John’s great Lou Carneseca and former NBA players Billy Schaeffer and Mel Davis came together to lend their support to Port Washington’s Archangel Michael Church for “A Very Special Evening” on Wednesday, December 7 at Woodside Acres Country Club.
“A Very Special Evening” was the final push needed to help the Archangel Michael Church reach a million-dollar fundraising goal. Proceeds from the dinner helped the church complete the Million Dollar Sprint—a campaign geared towards raising funds to build a gymnasium for the children of the church. The Sprint was kicked off when an anonymous donor pledged one million dollars towards the construction of the gym, under the condition that the church raises a matching million dollars in donations. The church was only given six months to raise the matching funds by the December 31st deadline. Prior to the event, the church had received almost $700,000 in donations. Proceeds from the dinner as well as the generosity of the event sponsors and donors who stepped up that evening helped them raise an additional $300,000 in cash and commitments. The church must hold one million dollars in cash on December 31 to receive the matching million, and this event brought it to the edge of that goal.
“We asked the community to step up in a big way for this project and they did more than we could have hoped for in one evening,” said Gym Committee Co-Chair John Petras. “Everyone has dug deep and been so generous—this evening was the perfect chance to share in this achievement. From Coach Carnesecca’s inspiring words to the crowd’s energy and generosity, this evening was a special one for our parish and particularly for the youth of our community.”
The event was sponsored by Marathon Energy and The Whitmore Group.
