Senator Hannon wants to remind all Nassau County residents

(Long Island, NY) Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau) wants to remind all Nassau County residents that the deadline for filing property tax exemption applications is January 2, 2012. This includes the State’s STAR (School Tax Relief) Exemption programs, as well as other exemptions offered by Nassau County.

“Most people are well aware of the very successful STAR Program,” says Hannon. “The Basic STAR Exemption is available to every resident who owns and lives in his/her own home, condominium or co-op, and whose adjusted gross income is $500,000 or less.  The Enhanced STAR Exemption is for Senior Citizens who are 65 and above, or who will be 65 next year, and who have adjusted gross incomes below $79,050.”

Both STAR Exemptions provide residents with a reduction in their school taxes, while the Enhanced STAR offers an even greater reduction for seniors with limited incomes.

“Most of us are already enrolled in the STAR Program, but some may not be,” says Hannon. “If you are going to be 65 next year, you may be eligible for the Enhanced STAR Program, if you’ve moved, you need to reapply, so it’s important not to miss out on all the exemptions to which you are entitled.”

Residents who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption or who participate in the Enhanced STAR Income Verification Program do not need to re-file, but residents who have moved do not have their exemption automatically transferred.

Hannon says all residents can contact his Community Office at 516-739-1700, or visit www.kemphannon.com, if they have any questions about the programs or need applications for the STAR Exemption Program.

Aside from the State’s STAR Exemption (which is for school taxes), Nassau County also offers several real property tax exemptions, including those for Senior Citizens, Veterans, Cold War Veterans, Volunteer Firefighters or Ambulance Service Workers, Persons with Disabilities and Limited Incomes, and First Time Homebuyers of Newly Constructed Houses.  Those applications can be obtained from the Nassau County Department of Assessment by calling 516-571-1500 or visiting www.nassaucountyny.gov.
