State to offer Pre-Paid ATM-style Cards in Addition to Check or Direct Deposit
(Long Island, NY) Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau) announces New Yorkers have a new option other to receive a refund payment for their New York State income taxes. Currently, the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance offers either a check or direct deposit for their income tax refunds. Beginning next year, a new option of receiving a pre-paid ATM-style will be available
“This third option for those receiving income tax refunds is just an additional option for residents,” says Hannon. “It will be especially helpful to those who either do not have bank accounts, who don’t use direct deposit, or who simply don’t want to receive a check in the mail.”
According to the Department of Taxation and Finance, the cards will be available at no cost to taxpayers, and no bank account or credit check is required to enroll.
Once activated by the recipient, the prepaid card can be used just like an ATM card.
“You can withdraw cash from the card at most banks, and will provide the taxpayer with immediate access to their refund,” said Hannon. “It can also be used in most stores, and like a debit card, you can get cash back. If the card is lost or stolen, it will be replaced at no additional charge.”
Cardholders are also protected against unauthorized or fraudulent charges.
“Those who prefer to receive a check the old fashioned way, or who have used the direct deposit option will still have those two methods of refund available to them,” said Hannon.
