Pro Soccer Player Teams Up With Good Sam’s Child Life Program

(West Islip, NY) – While being hospitalized is a challenge for anyone, the greatest hardship for children may be having to stay indoors, unable to join other youngsters on the field. Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s pediatric patients have had the soccer world come to them with visits from professional soccer player Sue Weber. Weber, originally from Islip, has been teaming up with the hospital’s Child Life staff to bring cheer to these young patients.
“Life as an athlete has been good to me, and it is important to give back to my community,” stated Weber.
On a number of recent occasions, she has interacted with the kids in the playroom, talking with them, signing autographs and taking pictures. Sharing her experiences has brightened the children’s time spent in the hospital and they were excited to have a professional soccer player visit them.
“Sue is very receptive to kids and works well with all ages. We have enjoyed her visits and are grateful for her commitment to the children,” said Good Samaritan’s Child Life Program Director Joan Alpers.
Good Samaritan Hospital’s Child Life Program addresses the apprehension felt by pediatric patients and their families. “The goal of our program is to ease fears or concerns about hospitalization or illness and to address the emotional and creative needs of the pediatric patient,” said Alpers. “We support children and their parents throughout their hospital experience and arrange a variety of activities to help children cope during their stay.”
