istock_000012619395xsmall.jpg(Long Island, N.Y.) There has been no shortage of news recently on SEO and how businesses are interested in taking advantage of it. For readers who may be unsure, Search engine optimization is the method of optimizing the performance and positioning of a web site in Internet search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Web sites which appear at the very top of the search results, while not those which are sponsored (paid for), are considered to be the most relevant and yield the most Internet traffic. These “high rankings” are a major contributing factor to much of today’s consumer choice as well as a businesses branding and overall online success. SEO companies are either established firms or small experienced independent consultants that work to enhance a businesses visibility in search engines through sophisticated online Internet marketing and website promotion techniques.

For many business owners, the thought of having to sift through and hire an SEO company to help them accomplish this can be a daunting task. With so many of these companies available, it’s difficult to understand how best to choose between them while considering costs verses results. Varying factors can be considered to make an educated decision on which company your business should partner up with - because that’s what it essentially is, a partnership. The educated business owner knows ahead of time that their looking for a reliable source who cares about their future ongoing business, and that means the selected company is in it for the long term. You’re not going to be searching for a ‘pay-one-price’ service which is done just once. Realistically, expect ongoing fees with services provided on an ongoing basis.

SEO service contracts range widely with common examples as little as $200 to as much as $2,000 per month or more for a small business. It should be noted that the cost of each company may reflect the quality of service as well as how much time is spent on a website’s promotion. As is true with general advertising, the bigger a budget, the larger the ad campaign will be run on the advertisers behalf. Businesses will have no problem finding lower priced SEO companies but keep in mind, this will generally have a direct effect on the level of service provided. The amount of man hours invested in a sites rankings is often impacted by not just techniques, but price. Lower costing SEO companies may be short-staffed and spend a significantly less amount of time on a business - and good SEO companies as well as educated business owners understand that a lot of time is needed for a serious effective campaign. An SEO company that charges less may be run by a single consultant that can put in limited effort into promoting your business. Typically, lower costing SEO companies do not have the manpower to develop your business strategy as well as a company that is dedicated to search engine optimization or is manned by a larger office. This isn’t always the case, but often it is, depending on the person running the show. This is why it is recommended that you try to determine if an SEO company has a dedicated team or are working out of their home.

An SEO company that charges more often has an experienced staff that is knowledgeable and thoroughly plans a method to effectively increase a businesses awareness. Upon researching, a more expensive company may have a larger staff that is truly committed to improving the likelihood of higher rankings on internet searches by having individuals specialize in different aspects of the business, such as geographic or local placement (which is quickly growing in importance), pay-per-click services, conversion optimization and website development. Better SEO businesses will have experienced workers who are both skilled and have the credentials to back up the higher prices for which they ask. An SEO business that demands a higher pay-rate might just have a fuller staff that can easily handle multiple projects and should be willing to keep you well informed on your projects success.

Amazing that an article like this gets over 100 tweets, yet fails to mention arguably the most important facet of site rank and overall SEO: Backlinks and Referring Sites!

$2000 for the services of a SEO company! That sounds unreasonable. At the end of the day the site content and value addition to the visitor matters. The $2000 would be better spent on promoting and marketing the website.

Many factors can make for a successful SEO campaign.
    • Choosing realistic keywords and the right number of them
    • Placing the chosen keywords in the right areas of the site
    • Correct density and style of the chosen keywords
    • The correct amount of overall text on the page
    • How many pages your site contains

I believe that all of your services pages need to be optimized because each page requires a different set keywords that are searched for.
I agree that $2000 per month is exorbitant.

GraphicHeadquarters.com, a Long Island based creative services page does it right and for much less.
