Kara Kvilekval, MD, Named Chairwoman of Mather Medical Board

(Port Jefferson, N.Y.) – Kara H.V. Kvilekval, MD, of Setauket has been named chairwoman of the Mather Hospital medical board and president of its medical staff. A vascular surgeon, Dr. Kvilekval succeeds cardiologist Lloyd Lense, MD. She was previously vice chairwoman of the medical board and vice president of the medical staff.

Orthopedic surgeon Richard Savino, MD, of Port Jefferson was named vice chairman of the medical board and vice president of the medical staff.

A surgeon and physician specializing in vascular diseases, Dr. Kvilekval is a member of the Physician Leadership, Quality Management and Credentials committees at Mather. She is also active in professional/community organizations including the Long Island Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a past president of the Suffolk County Medical Society.

Dr. Kvilekval is also Medical Director, Vascular Laboratory, of Vascular Associates of Long Island in Stony Brook. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Kvilekval is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery, at SUNY Stony Brook. She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General and Vascular surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

She received her BA from Simmons College in Boston and her MD from Stony Brook University. She completed her residency and fellowship at Stony Brook Medical Center.

Dr. Savino is Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mather. He served on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, where his responsibilities included being a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles and the Johns Hopkins University athletic department. He also served as physician for the PGA US Open at Shinnecock (2004) and the PGA US Open at Bethpage (2002). He is a member of the budget Advisory Committee for the Port Jefferson School District.

A board certified orthopedic surgeon with a private practice at Long Island Bone and Joint, L.L.P., Port Jefferson, where he is Vice President, Dr. Savino is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons as well as the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Suffolk Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Savino received a BS in Biology and Theology from Boston College and an MD from the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He had a surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Temple University Hospital and a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
