Alessi And DiNapoli Announce Forensic Audit Of MTA Overtime Spending
September 8, 2010
(New York, N.Y.) - Marc Alessi and NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced the beginning of a forensic audit of overtime spending at the MTA. It comes on the heels of another audit of the MTA that raised concerns about increased overtime costs from 2005-2009.
“Something is wrong with a system that allows more than 140 people to double their salaries through overtime,” said DiNapoli. “It’s hard to justify repeated fare hikes, layoffs and service reductions when New Yorkers believe the MTA isn’t controlling spending and restraining costs. For too long, the MTA has had a culture of acceptance when it comes to overtime abuse. That has to change.”
Earlier this year the MTA proposed drastic cuts on the East End. Residents and local officials, including Alessi fought against the cuts and were victorious in restoring weekday service to the area. Now they have proposed increasing fares for riders, including LIRR service.
“I have been calling for this audit for years. I am glad the comptroller’s office will finally be able to get to the bottom of the outrageous amount of money the MTA spends on overtime,” Alessi said. “I voted against the payroll tax because I believe the MTA has not done enough to reduce costs, yet they expect Long Island commuters to pay an increased fare to get to and from work. It’s absolutely unacceptable.”
