(Long Island, N.Y.) - September is National Hunger Awareness Month and Panera Bread hopes to take a big bite out of hunger here on Long Island.  From Monday through Friday, September 20 to 24, Panera Bread is stepping up its support of Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. Guests who drop off a non-perishable food item for Island Harvest by 11AM at any of Panera Bread’s 19 Long Island bakery-cafes from September 20th to 24th will receive a free Grilled Breakfast Sandwich of their choice right on the spot.

“Island Harvest needs these contributions to help provide critical food support to over 570 pantries, soup kitchens and emergency feeding programs they serve in Nassau and Suffolk counties,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Panera Bread here on Long Island. “Every day we package up all the bread, bagels, and pastries that remain on our shelves at the end of the day and donate them to help Island Harvest. Now, we’re inviting our guests to help too? and we’re saying thanks with a free grilled breakfast sandwich for each guest that makes a non-perishable food donation. ”

“Over 285,000 people, including 110,000 children face the reality of hunger each day right here on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “The slumping economy has thrown many of our neighbors into a crisis, forcing them to choose between paying the rent, a utility bill and buying food. Contributions from businesses like Panera Bread help address the growing problem of hunger in our communities.”

Panera Bread hopes to encourage its guests to help take a bite out of hunger here on Long Island by providing each donor with a nutritious hot breakfast sandwich, during its campaign to help Island Harvest.
