Habitat For Humanity Of Suffolk Plays Major Role In Achieving Top Ten Builder Status In The United States For Habitat For Humanity International

top_ten_builder_photo.jpg(Middle Island, N.Y.) - Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, HFHS, has earned the distinction of helping Habitat for Humanity International to become one of the nation’s top ten builders. HFHS ranks in the top ten percent of Habitat for Humanity affiliates nation-wide.  With HFHS help Habitat for Humanity was named eighth on the Builder 100 list by Builder’s Magazine, marking the first time the nonprofit has been among the top 10 biggest builders in the United States. Builder magazine’s annual Builder 100 List compiles data provided by the nation’s builders, including their closings to prepare the list.

HFHS has built homes in every town in Suffolk County except for Smithtown.  The Habitat program is strong in Suffolk and has been able to continue its mission despite the down turn in the economy through the support of Suffolk County and the towns where land has been made available. HFHS affiliate has maintained construction of 12 new or renovated homes each of the past two years.  Since 1982 HFHS has built 142 houses, and is on track to build another 12 next year.

“Habitat for Humanity affiliates have been working in more than 1,500 communities in the U.S. to ensure that more than 5,200 families had a new or renovated affordable home to live in last year,” said Mark Andrews, senior director of U.S. Operations for Habitat for Humanity International. “We could not have accomplished this work without the sustained support of local leaders, volunteers and donors.”

Habitat for Humanity International is an ecumenical Christian ministry that welcomes to its work all people dedicated to the cause of eliminating poverty housing. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built, rehabilitated, repaired or improved more than 350,000 houses worldwide, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 1.75 million people.
