(New York, N.Y.) - With temperatures rapidly rising, Senator Kemp Hannon is offering a few helpful tips that will make your summer more comfortable and safe during these extremely hot days.

  • Always be prepared.  If you anticipate being outside in the heat for an extended period of time, make sure to pack extra water and sunscreen.
  • Over hydrate!  When you are thirsty, it means that your body is already dehydrated.  Water and sports drinks like Gatorade are the best way to hydrate.  Stay away from anything with caffeine or alcohol, as they expedite the urination process, which makes your body lose more fluids.
  • Visit the library.  Libraries across New York State have recently opened official cooling centers for residents without air conditioning.  At many of these cooling centers, the libraries offer lunch for $1 and in some cases for seniors lunches are free.

Many unnecessary injuries and deaths occur every summer due to a lack of preparation and common sense in the heat.  Taking precautions is crucial. For more important information and a list of upcoming events in your community, visit www.kemphannon.com .
