June 28, 2010
(Garden City, N.Y.) — The WE CARE Fund, a charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association, will host its annual Stephen W. Schlissel WE CARE Golf and Tennis Classic on Monday, August 2, 2010 at the Middle Bay Country Club, 3600 Skillman Avenue, Oceanside, NY. WE CARE will be paying tribute to Island Harvest, Marilyn K. Genoa, Esq. and the Honorable Denise L. Sher, who will receive the prestigious Gassman Award. Proceeds from the fundraising event will go towards providing WE CARE grants and scholarships for those in need on Long Island.
Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will be recognized for its active dedication and commitment in addressing the critical issue of hunger on Long Island. The Mineola-based organization is a critical link in supplying supplemental food products over 570 community-based soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency food programs throughout Long Island. Island Harvest has delivered more than 60 million pounds of food, supplementing nearly 47 million meals, since its inception in 1992.
Marilyn K. Genoa, principal at Genoa & Associates, P.C., will be honored for her longstanding civic involvement and leadership. She serves as an elected Trustee in the Village of Old Brookville as well as Deputy Police Commissioner for the Old Brookville Police Department. She is also an active member of the Nassau County Bar Association and sits on the board for WE CARE and is involved in numerous philanthropic causes and organizations.
The Honorable Denise L. Sher, a judge and practicing lawyer for more than 30 years, will be presented with The Gassman Award. Named for the founder of WE CARE, Stephen Gassman, the award is presented to an individual who has provided extraordinary service to the charitable endeavor. A tireless worker for community and professional organizations, Judge Sher, is a true leader in Nassau’s legal community. Currently Acting Supreme Court Justice in the Nassau County Supreme Court, Judge Sher is a longtime member and supporter of the WE CARE Advisory Board.
Since its establishment in 1988, WE CARE, presently co-chaired by the Hon. Peter B. Skelos and Christopher McGrath, has provided more than $2 million in grants to charitable causes. The organization has granted substantial support to soup and food kitchens in Nassau County and has provided funding for children with cancer to attend Sunrise Day Camp, as well as funding to send ten disabled children to Camp Kiwanis.
WE CARE grants have also helped establish and maintain safe houses for abused spouses and children, provide clothing for the unemployed to wear on job interviews and provide legal services to the poor.
Over 100 different individual organizations have received WE CARE Fund grants in the last few years. WE CARE has provided scholarships to high school graduates from Nassau County, scholarships for law students, and grants to organizations such as AHRC Foundation of Nassau, Island Harvest, Maurer Foundation for Breast Health, NC Coalition against Domestic Violence, Theodore Roosevelt Council Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Nassau County, just to name a few. This year’s Stephen W. Schlissel WE CARE Golf and Tennis Classic will help the organization to continue its substantial support in funding grants and events for charitable causes on Long Island.
