Four Key Safety Tips For July 4th
June 28, 2010
(New York, N.Y.) - The Fourth of July is a time for celebrating our great nation with family and friends. Senator Kemp Hannon is wishing everyone a very happy Fourth of July, but also reminding residents to stay safe and keep a close eye on children during the festivities.
“Unfortunately, Independence Day is not just famous for patriotism, fireworks and barbecues, it’s famous around the county for emergency room visits too,” said Senator Hannon.
This Independence Day, Senator Hannon asks you to review the following four precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for all:
- While using fireworks remains illegal in New York, there are still a great deal of patients in the ER with firework related injuries every year. Do not use fireworks. Keep children close by while watching professional firework displays.
- If you are going to, or hosting a barbecue or party, be responsible for yourself and others as well. Do not let anyone drive if they have been drinking.
- Keep your pets safe! The combination of hot weather and loud fireworks with the sensitive ears of cats and dogs can lead to panic and overheating. Remember to provide plenty of water for your pet and frequently check on the temperature if they are in the house.
- If you are entertaining and cooking for guests, cook your food on the well done side to avoid food poisoning. Keep foods that spoil easily in a cool location.
