(Bethpage, N.Y.)–St. Joseph Hospital’s (formerly New Island Hospital’s) Margaret Minnick, RN, MSN, and John Jackalone, DPM, DABPS, are being honored as Administrator of the Year and Physician (Podiatrist) of the Year, respectively, for their outstanding leadership in diabetes education.  Both received the awards from the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators (MNYADE) at its 2010 awards dinner as part of its annual recognition program. The association serves as an expert resource for people with diabetes and those at risk.  Through a nominations process, the MNYADE awards acknowledge leading area diabetes educators in a number of categories.

Margaret Minnick earned Administrator of the Year for her leadership, vision and commitment to improving the lives of individuals with diabetes.  Ms. Minnick, a registered nurse who also holds a master’s of science in nursing, is vice president of Patient Care Services at St. Joseph Hospital since 2008.

John Jackalone, MD, was recognized as a Physician of the Year for his work as a board certified podiatrist, an important area of medicine for patients with diabetes as it damages nerve endings and blood vessels in the foot and interferes with the ability to fight infection.  At St. Joseph, Dr. Jackalone is associate director of the Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center, and has served as the on-site residency coordinator since 2008.  Dr. Jackalone has been with the hospital since 2007.

“St. Joseph Hospital joins MNYADE in recognizing the outstanding contributions made by Ms. Minnick and Dr. Jackalone to the education and treatment of diabetes patients,” said Aaron E. Glatt, MD, the hospital’s president and CEO.  “As a community hospital, we saw the need to address the increasing incidence of diabetes in our service area, and created the Diabetes Education Center and the Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center to help local patients better manage their disease.”

St. Joseph’s first outpatient diabetes education center, which is recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, was introduced in 2009 to help patients with diabetes live long and healthy lives.  The center offers a complete range of disease-management services, including outpatient individual and group classes covering medical and nutrition information; inpatient training or advanced education in diabetes management for registered nurses; supportive care, such as a diabetes support group; and specialty physicians.

Many patients who make use of St. Joseph’s Diabetes Education Center also require the services of its Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center. Hyperbaric medicine involves the use of oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure to help heal problematic wounds.  The St. Joseph Hospital Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center’s specialized team of physicians, nurses and technicians achieve a 90% success rate in the treatment of advanced wounds, far higher than the national industry average.

“On behalf of St. Joseph Hospital, we congratulate Ms. Minnick and Dr. Jackalone for their well-deserved awards,” noted Dr. Glatt.
