shed_the_meds.jpg(Nassau County, N.Y.)-Senator Kemp Hannon and Senator Carl L. Marcellino partnered with the Nassau County Police Department to help residents safely dispose of their expired or unused medications.

“I was so glad that Shed the Meds was a huge success,” said Senator Hannon. “I witnessed four 30 gallon bags being filled with drugs, drugs that would have otherwise been disposed of unsafely or possibly obtained by someone who may use them improperly,” Hannon continued.

The “Shed the Meds” program took place at the Bethpage Fire Department at 225 Broadway from 9 a.m. to Noon. Residents had the opportunity to drop off any medication that expired or that they no longer needed.  It was collected and safely disposed of by officers from the Nassau County Police Department.

Throwing out medication improperly, such as flushing them in the toilet or pouring them down the drain, can cause pollution in local waterways and in our drinking water. Safe disposal helps protect the environment and keeps medications out of the hands of young children or others who would use them improperly.
