Runners And Walkers Needed To Help Run Hunger Off Long Island
May 18, 2010
(Mineola, N.Y.)-Attention runners and walkers: get on your mark, get set, and go run hunger off Long Island! The Nassau Chapter of the New York State Society of CPAs is again hosting “The Ellen Gordon CPAs 4 (a) Cause 5K” run/walk to be held on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at Wantagh Park, Wantagh, NY. Proceeds from the charity event will benefit Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization.
Over 283,700 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children face the risk of going hungry each day. The prolonged economic downturn has greatly affected many Long Island families ability to put food on the table, like the working-class family of seven who, after paying all their bills, had no money left at the end of the month and were forced to turn to a local food pantry for help. Or the elderly couple who were once food donors to local charities, now finding themselves asking for help. Each week, nearly 65,000 individuals are seeking emergency food assistance in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, but in many cases, it’s not nearly enough.
Fortunately, there’s organizations like the Nassau Chapter of the New York State Society of CPAs, which for the past eight years has been sponsoring the 5K run/walk to benefit Island Harvest. Funds raised by this popular event go directly to supporting the emergency food needs of over 570 soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency food programs served by Island Harvest.
Runners and walkers interested in participating in “The Ellen Gordon CPAs 4 (a) Cause 5K” run/walk can download a registration form at: www.active.com or www.islandharvest.org. Trophies will be awarded for top finishers and there will be post-race food, refreshments, prizes and entertainment, but perhaps the biggest prize will be the satisfaction in knowing that you are helping to make a difference in addressing the critical problem of hunger on Long Island.
