Statement By Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos
May 11, 2010
(New York, N.Y.)-By voting against the budget extender, Senate Republicans are delivering a message that enough is enough. We are sick and tired of the Democrats’ complete and utter failure to get a budget done, or worse, to even try to get a new budget in place.
Forty days after the budget deadline, there are no budget talks, in secret or in public. Senate and Assembly Democrats continue to violate the law by refusing to convene joint, public conference committees that would help get a budget done.
We were told as soon as they blew by the April 1st budget deadline that negotiations were continuing and that weekly emergency extenders were necessary to keep government functioning. These last several weeks have demonstrated that there are no discussions, there is no budget imminent and the Democrats in the Senate and Assembly are refusing to make the tough spending reductions necessary to balance the budget. All we have are empty promises that budget talks are moving forward.
Last week, 22 Senate Republicans voted against extending this budget charade another week. Today, all Senate Republicans voted against putting off what needs to be done right away, which is adopt a budget, without further delay.
Our message should be read loud and clear today — end the charade, convene joint public budget conference committees immediately and stay in Albany until a budget gets done.
