Field Of Dreams, Soccer Program Gives Children With Special Needs The Chance To Play A Team Sport
May 7, 2010
(Cedarhurst, N.Y.)—To accommodate children who were previously unable to participate in a mainstream soccer program because of a neurological or physical disability, the JCC of the Greater Five Towns and the Hewlett-Lawrence Soccer Club announce the formation of the “Field of Dreams” soccer program. Both organizations have come together in setting up a special learning environment that is specifically tailored to address and compensate for any issues that may have previously prevented a child from playing soccer.
“The ‘Field of Dreams’ soccer program provides an opportunity for children with cognitive and/or physical limitations to join in an organized team sport, build character, improve physical conditioning in a fun and nurturing environment,” said Rina Shkolnik, executive director of the JCC of the Greater Five Towns. “Participation in team sports not only promotes inclusion, but it also improves physical functioning, and enhances a child’s overall well being.”
Studies have shown that typically, children with disabilities are more restricted in their participation in physical activities and have lower fitness levels and higher incidents of obesity than other children. “Field of Dreams” provides a level of activity which is an essential part of maintaining a child’s overall good health.
The JCC has a fall and spring schedule similar to that of a typical or mainstream soccer program. Each seasonal schedule is made up of skill sessions, which are run by JCC staff in conjunction with professional trainers from the Hewlett-Lawrence Soccer Club. The premise of these sessions is to teach the game of soccer while providing a fun and pressure-free environment.
The JCC is also seeking volunteers who will serve as peer mentors in this special program. If you are interested in enrolling your child or volunteer opportunities, please contact Gayle Fremed at 516-569-6733.
The Jewish Community Center of the Greater Five Towns is a beneficiary agency of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of New York, a member agency of the United Way of Long Island, the Jewish Community Centers Association and an affiliate of the Five Towns Community Chest. It serves the Jewish populations of Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, Far Rockaway, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence, Lynbrook, Malverne, Valley Stream, West Hempstead and Woodmere.
