Portledge School Celebrates Its 37th Annual Auction Gala – The Ball Of Roses
April 29, 2010
(Locust Valley, N.Y.)-Portledge School in Locust Valley’s most significant annual fundraiser, the Auction Gala, was held on Saturday, April 17, 2010. A crowd of nearly 250 parents, trustees, faculty, staff and administrators, as well as other friends of Portledge, spent a fabulous evening among the roses adorning Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor.
With silent auction items as varied as Taylor Swift concert tickets and fine French wines, and live auction items including a Costa Rica Retreat and Yankees vs. Red Sox with Head of School Steve Hahn, the evening was filled with lively conversation, old, new and renewed friendships, and the extraordinary auctioneering of Bernadette Castro, former New York State Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and former Portledge Trustee.
Red glow bidding sticks, a delicious dinner, the Swingadelics band, dancing, laughter and intense auction bidding – from the first hors d’oeuvre to the last chocolate dipped strawberry – the Ball of Roses Auction Gala Committee did a spectacular job of making this a truly memorable evening. The Auction Gala raises significant funds in support of all of Portledge School’s programs, including athletics, the arts, and in the classroom.
Kudos go out to the energetic and dedicated event chairs, Samara Meshel and Marianna Kirikian, and their sub-committee chairs: Holly DeNatale (live auction), Trish Espinal (silent auction), Ellen Hobbs (decorating), Meryl Kravietz and Sharon Greenstein (journal), and Carolyn Mott (raffle). An outstanding job was done by the volunteer committee members and the team from Portledge’s Advancement Department – Tara Askeland and Peter Cox, under the leadership of Burnham “Turk” Lewis, Portledge Class of 1987.
