King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc., Donates $100,000 of Groceries to Island Harvest
April 27, 2010
(Bethpage, N.Y.) – King Kullen, America’s First Supermarket, recently donated more than $100,000 worth of groceries to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. King Kullen Vice President Thomas K. Cullen made the announcement.
“King Kullen has a long history of helping the less fortunate in the community,” explained Cullen. “It’s a tradition that goes back to my grandfather, Michael J. Cullen, who founded King Kullen in 1930. We support groups like Island Harvest because the need for their services has never been greater.”
In the past few years alone, King Kullen has donated more than $800,000 worth of surplus food to Island Harvest, which delivers millions of pounds of food to a network of 600+ Long Island based food pantries, soup kitchens, and other non-profit organizations. King Kullen’s most recent donation was comprised mainly of non-perishable, Passover-related foods.
“As Long Island’s own supermarket, King Kullen is proud to make a difference in the fight against hunger…right here on the home front,” concluded Cullen. “We are dedicated to helping our underserved communities and applaud Island Harvest’s good work and the food pantries it supports.”
In addition to Island Harvest, King Kullen is a longtime supporter of Long Island Cares, Long Island’s first food bank and one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger action organizations. Through its “Check Out Hunger” campaign, King Kullen customers have generously donated more than $415,000 to Long Island Cares over the past ten years. In addition to its support of that campaign, King Kullen has also made a direct pledge of $100,000 to Long Island Cares.
Headquartered in Bethpage, New York, King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as American’s first supermarket. Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen, King Kullen today employs more than 4,800 people and operates 47 stores and four Wild by Nature stores throughout Long Island and Staten Island.

I was amazed at the generosity of King Kullen. I had no idea that this organization was involved in such great incentives. I myself am also involved with the needy and hungry. I am Vice President of Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation for Malverne Ladies Auxiliary where I raise money to give back to the Veterans and Homeless Veterans of Long Island. This is near and dear to my heart. I commend you on your generosity and if there is anything you could donate to us it would be greatly appreciated. We replenesh the food pantry at the Salvation Homeless Shelter for Veterans on the Northport VA facility in Northport, LI. We also adopt needy Veteran families that are less fortunate.
Thank you for you great work.
