(Albany, N.Y.)-The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced today it will sponsor the first annual New York State Data Center Energy Efficiency Leadership Award to recognize a New York State organization that demonstrates leadership in pursuing energy efficiency in its data center.

The award’s submission deadline is April 29, 2010 at 5:00PM EST.  Eligibility is open to industrial or commercial facilities, state or local governments, not-for-profit or private institutions, public or private K-12 schools, colleges, universities, or health care facilities.

“Data centers are one of the fastest growing sectors of energy users, and controlling energy use is essential for reducing energy demands and operating costs,” said NYSERDA President and CEO Francis J. Murray, Jr. “This award will publicly recognize the organization that has shown leadership and vision in its overall approach to data center energy efficiency and provides a forum for others to learn about innovations in the field.”

New York State data centers’ energy consumption is equal to the energy consumption of nearly 700,000 single family homes per year – 4.5 billion kilowatt hours. According to Lawrence Berkley National Laboratories, if this trend continues, energy consumption by servers and data centers is forecasted to double over the next three to five years.

The winner of the award will be announced at the Uptime Institute Symposium on May 19, 2010.  This three day event will feature presentations on optimizing data center and IT performance, technology innovation in data centers, and the future of IT and the data center.  For more information on the Symposium, visit http://symposium.uptimeinstitute.com/.
