One-Act Play Festival to Premiere in Northport
March 29, 2010
(Northport, N.Y.)-Comedy, tragedy, suspense, romance—you can find them all in one weekend at Northport’s First Annual One-Act Play Festival. Fourteen original plays, by local aspiring playwrights and by high school students, were selected in a juried competition to be showcased at Northport High School ’s Little Theater on Friday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The winning scripts will be produced by several theatrical companies from the Long Island area. As some of the plays contain powerful adult-related material concerning drugs, alcohol and crime, the festival is not appropriate for very young children.
The Northport One-Act Play Festival is the brainchild of its coordinators, JoAnn Katz and playwright Michael Casano. Ms. Katz, an accomplished advocate for community theater on Long Island , is the founder of the Northport Reader’s Theater, which offers monthly public readings of original plays. Ms. Katz says the purpose of this One-Act Festival goes far beyond its entertainment value. The festival theme is “Communication,” with the Saturday afternoon plays specifically relating to difficult issues that parents and students deal with at home and in their community, particularly drug and alcohol abuse.
The Northport Arts Coalition conceived the concept of working with students, through the arts, in cooperation with the Northport-East Northport Community Drug & Alcohol Task Force. The festival is designed to provide local playwrights and high school students the opportunity to display their writing talents and local actors to practice their theater skills.
Following all of the performances, students will provide musical entertainment while audiences have an opportunity to mingle with the actors, directors and playwrights. Refreshments will be sold to benefit the Honor Society. Both evenings will end with the presentation of awards, determined by votes cast by the audience and by a panel of judges.
As an added bonus, following the Saturday 3:00 p.m. performance, there will be a panel discussion of some of the sensitive topics dealt with in the plays. The panel will include an abuse specialist, law enforcement staff, school administrator, teacher and playwright.
Northport High School is located on the corner of Elwood and Laurel Hill Roads in East Northport, Long Island , NY . Suggested donation for evening performances is $10. There is no charge for the Saturday 3:00 p.m. performance. Reservations are recommended for all performances as space is limited. Reservations may be made by email to NorthportPlays@gmail.com or by phoning 631-223-8053.
