cboyle18.jpg(Long Island, N.Y.) - Hey, things are tough all over right now. While the battered economy is now showing some signs of stabilizing (well, a little, anyway), there’s still a record number of people out there with bills to pay and no steady paycheck to enable them to do so. If you count yourself among the vast number of American citizens who were laid off from their job within the last year or two and are currently collecting unemployment benefits, you may not be aware of certain resources that are available to help get you back on your feet. The purpose of this article is to shed light on a few of them for you.

First of all, if you’re on unemployment and have not already done so, get yourself down to your town’s Job Center. More than likely you’ve already been there for orientation when you first signed up for unemployment, but if you just zoned out while doing so you’ve done yourself a great disservice. The dedicated people at the Job Center aren’t just there to nag about getting out and looking for a job; they’re also able to help you out in a wide variety of different ways, ranging from evaluation of resumes and job interview techniques to training you for a new (and possibly more viable) career. The Town of Oyster Bay, for example, offers the following perks to assist you in getting back on your feet:

Instructional classes:
You can sign up for a large number of free on-site classes aimed at educating you on, among other things, the finer points of technology and office work. Courses range from beginner (basic computer use) to intermediate and beyond (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc). Check with your local town for a comprehensive list of clases available.

Interview clothing:
In the event that your interview duds are, shall we say, on the shabby side, there exists the possibility that you could be the lucky recipient of a high-quality business suit donated to the town from one of a number of generous benefactors. After all, how do you think you’ll fare with a prospective employer if you show up in sweats and a baseball hat? The clothes make the man/woman, after all.

Money for trade school or college:
If you meet certain criteria- for example, your job hunt has been fruitless for an extended period, among other things- you may be eligible for financial aid to assist with the costs of going to college or a trade school. Hey, if you’re in a career dead-end, maybe what you need is a new set of skills to make yourself stand out more, right? Going back to school can be daunting, especially if you’re in your 30’s or older, but remember this: you’re NEVER too old to improve yourself.

So, if you’re unemployed and having difficulty finding a new job in this harrowing economy of ours, you owe it to yourself to get down to your town’s Job Center and see for yourself what programs they offer for people in your position. It speaks volumes about the Town of Oyster Bay (as well as other towns offering similar programs) that they make help such as this available to its residents; you don’t have to go it alone in this cruel and depressing job market any longer.

Good luck!
