(New York, N.Y.)-Over the next two years, New York State will provide over $100 million through its Industrial and Process Efficiency program to help data centers and manufacturers control their energy costs and improve their competitiveness, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced today.  Funding will support energy studies and capital improvements that will increase energy efficiency and productivity and reduce waste.

While NYSERDA offers incentives for all business sectors to retrofit existing buildings or to incorporate energy efficiency measures into new buildings, the funding announced today is being targeted specifically for data centers and manufacturers, which are among the largest consumers of energy and have significant potential for efficient growth.

To ensure the widest possible access to these energy efficiency funds, NYSERDA has awarded three companies approximately $2 million each to help manufacturers and data centers identify cost-effective energy savings options and educate these businesses on available funding.  The companies are Clough Harbour & Associates (CHA) (Albany), Energy & Resource Solutions (ERS) (New York), and Willdan Energy Solutions (New York).

“The investments NYSERDA is making in energy efficiency are absolutely critical for both improving New York’s economy and protecting our environment,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA.    “New York is a great place to do business, and our funds will help leverage New York’s benefits as a business location, while making the businesses that are here more competitive in the marketplace.  We look forward to working with CHA, ERS, and Willdan Energy Solutions to help New York manufacturers and data centers access all the funds available.”

In 2009, NYSERDA invested approximately $4 million to improve the energy efficiency of the manufacturing and data center industries, reducing their energy consumption by nearly 41 million kilowatt hours of electricity—the equivalent of supplying nearly 6,300 single family homes with electricity for an entire year.

“This program is a remarkable opportunity for industry in New York State make great strides in sustainability,” said Raymond J. Kinley, CEO of Clough Harbour & Associates. “We will work closely with NYSERDA to help businesses across the State to identify, implement, and finance practical ways to boost their energy efficiency and improve their long term business performance.”

“NYSERDA is leading the country with progressive energy efficiency programs that help businesses lower their operating costs,” said Mark C. D’Antonio, Vice President of Engineering at ERS, Inc.  “The Industrial and Process Efficiency program is a great example of this and provides a terrific opportunity for industrial and data center facilities in New York State to obtain assistance in identifying and implementing energy efficiency measures.  We look forward to working with the downstate industries to help them take advantage of the program funding, improve energy efficiency in their facilities, and reduce their overall cost of doing business.”

New York has the nation’s second largest concentration of data centers—the centralized hubs that control the flow of computer information—and the state’s investment over the next two years will help the data center industry grow and support economic development.

“The data center industry presents both an exciting opportunity for energy efficiency and a huge challenge in terms of market penetration,” said Jay Bhalla, President of Willdan Energy Solutions, “and Willdan is excited to bring our data center expertise to the New York Market to help NYSERDA meet their ambitious energy savings goals.”

Data centers are required for virtually every aspect of the economy.  Recent studies conducted by Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that New York data centers spend nearly $600 million per year on energy costs and projected that their energy consumption could double in three to five years.

Funding for this new initiative is provided through the System Benefits Charge and is part of New York’s Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard.
