Hannon Urges Feds To Restore Funds To Fight Heroin

(New York, N.Y.)-Senator Kemp Hannon thanked Senator Charles Schumer for shedding additional light on the proposed 12 percent cut to the national High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program.
“I have been very vocal about the importance of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program for our communities,” said Senator Hannon. “It’s no secret that heroin and other drug use is a growing problem in Nassau County. If the federal government goes through with these cuts, I fear we will be taking a significant step backwards in our efforts to combat the selling and purchasing of heroin,” Hannon continued.
As a result of the proposed cuts, the New York area would lose between $1.2 million and $1.5 million in funding from the $10 million it received last year for the program. During a recent press conference, Schumer noted that a bag of heroin is now cheaper than a bag of cigarettes in New York.
Established by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988, the HIDTA is an intelligence and training program that provides assistance to federal, state and local law enforcement working in areas deemed to be most affected by drug trafficking.
