Beyond Coloring Eggs: Easter Fun for the Whole Family
March 11, 2010
(Long Island, N.Y.)—Easter is on its way and so is the unofficial start of spring. So, it’s time to celebrate! Kids can have some hands-on fun with traditional Easter egg decoration, and coloring kits certainly abound in the stores, but, for those who want to further explore their artistic talents, there’s plenty more to do. How about decorating an Easter basket or creating some homemade Easter cards for friends and family?
For the basket, all your child will need is: some colorful ribbons, felt in an assortment of springtime colors, some small googly eyes for the chicks and bunnies, a plain plastic or wicker Easter basket, glue, a glue gun, markers, and a healthy imagination. The Easter basket will serve as a blank canvas for your child’s creativity. To start, wrap the handle with ribbon and frequently tack it down using a glue gun to secure the ribbon to the handle or simply tie a series of multi-colored ribbons all along the handle. Use your felt material to cut out oval and other shapes for bunnies, eggs and chicks. Bring them to life with a pair of googly eyes or use markers to draw on eyes, beaks, rabbit noses and whiskers and then glue them to the outside of the basket.
Next, use these same shapes to create very special spring greeting cards to send to family and friends. Start with some white or pastel-colored poster board or card stock cut to card size and folded. Have your child print his or her name and own personal greeting on the inside, then decorate by gluing the felt chicks, bunnies and eggs on to the card stock or use markers to draw colorful and whimsical critters.
What else can you do? How about inviting some friends over for an exciting Easter egg hunt? Purchase plastic eggs in assorted colors and pop a surprise inside each. Then keep a record of where you’ve hidden each of the little treasures. Be sure to hide the same number of yellow, pink, blue, green, etc. eggs and then send each child out to find only one color egg. Make sure each has an Easter basket or a small decorated paper bag to store his or her newly-found treasures. Everyone should end up with the same number of eggs and some happy memories.
Then, top it all off by taking your family out to eat! On Easter Sunday, all participating Applebee’s restaurants in Nassau and Suffolk counties are offering two free Kids’ Menu entrees (for children age 12 and under) with every adult entrée purchase all day Sunday, April 4th for its dine-in customers. Have a safe and happy Easter and enjoy spending some special moments that you and your kids are sure to look back on and cherish.
