The Silent Killer: High Blood Pressure
March 9, 2010
(New York, N.Y.)-It’s called the “silent killer.” High Blood pressure often has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people don’t realize they have it. That’s why Senator Kemp Hannon is encouraging everyone to get their blood pressure checked regularly.
“Getting a routine blood pressure reading can save your life,” said Senator Hannon, who had his blood pressure measured in Albany this week. “These days it’s so simple. There are even home monitoring devices and machines in our local pharmacies. Why take the risk?,” Hannon continued.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every three adults in the U.S. has high blood pressure, which increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, the first and third leading causes of death in the United States.
In order to avoid high blood pressure, physicians recommend a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, exercising regularly and limiting alcohol use.
