(New York,N.Y.)-Senator  Kenneth  P. LaValle will hold a press event Friday, February 19  at  10:30  a.m.  in  front  of   Digger  O’Dells on West Main Street in Riverhead  to  call  for  the  repeal  of  the  Metropolitan Transportation Authority  (MTA)  payroll  tax  and  protest  the  proposed service cuts to eastern  Long  Island.   Senator LaValle will be joined by Assemblymen Fred Thiele and Marc Alessi, as well as Town Supervisors, local business owners, farmers,  and  LIRR  patrons who will speak out against the Authority’s new tax and proposed service cuts.

“The  MTA  payroll tax is unfair on its face and should be repealed,” said  Senator  LaValle. “This is a job-killing tax that hurts businesses in suburban  areas  of  the  state.   Eastern  Long  Island, in particular, is offered  minimal  rail service.  Now, in addition to forcing our businesses and  residents  to pay an unwarranted payroll tax, the MTA wants to cut the little service we have.”

Governor  Paterson has recently proposed reducing the rate of the MTA payroll  tax to .17 percent for businesses outside of New York City.  “This proposal  does  not  go  far  enough,  especially in a region that has been largely  underserved,”  concluded  Senator  LaValle.   Senator  LaValle and Assemblyman Thiele have introduced legislation that would eliminate the tax for  the Town of Brookhaven and Peconic Bay region.  In a separate measure, the  Senator  and  both  Assemblymen have introduced legislation that would allow  the  public  to  consider  the  creation of the Peconic Bay Regional Transportation Authority to replace the MTA.
