law_compeition_for_students.jpg(Long Island, N.Y.)-State Senator Kemp Hannon’s annual “There Ought To Be A Law” competition is in full swing for fifth and sixth graders across the sixth district of Long Island.

Cablevision will be featuring the law competition and Senator Hannon’s visit to Island Trees Memorial Middle School, where he recently gave an interactive lesson regarding state government and how a bill becomes a law in New York State.

“We learned about the legislative branch of government and asked the senator some questions. I asked him what it’s like to be a senator,” said sixth grader Vincent Simonetti.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to experience real life politics and the real life process of seeing a possible bill being written and how it can become a law,” said Principal of Island Trees Memorial Middle School Richard Bloom.  “It really makes history come to life.”

For Senator Hannon’s law competition, students have a chance to brainstorm and develop a new state law that they believe should be enacted. “The competition is a way for students to become acquainted with the state governmental process and realize that as American citizens, they play an important role in all levels of government, from local to state to national,” said Hannon.

Senator Hannon’s visit to Island Trees Memorial Middle School will air as a segment on Cablevision’s Neighborhood Journal.  The segment begins airing on February 26 on Channel 18 on
